I guess I sound like a John M. Harrison fanboy here but you should also check out "Empty Space" (best read after "Light" which is set in the same universe but can be tackled alone). He explores a similar story arc.

I feel like a healthy portion of the stories here follow the mantra of "A man often finds his fate on the road that he takes to avoid it."
